Rootsong Ecology LL was founded by Jerome C. Barner of Port Townsend, WA, in 2026 with the goal of providing ecologically sound expertise to prospective clients based on a wealth of field, research, and compliance-based experience in natural resources. 

With over 15+ years of experience in the public, private, academic, and non-profit sectors, my applied knowledge and field-based experience lends itself to a wide variety of environmental topics. 

I have an MSc in Ecology from SUNY ESF in mycorrhizal mediated nutrient dynamics in Northern hardwood forests. Most recently I served at the Forest Soil Scientist on the Olympic National Forest and a BAER (burned area emergency response) Soil Scientist with the US Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest. Prior to this, I served as a Forest Inventory and Analysis crew leader for five years in CA, OR, and WA.

I am a trained ecologist, soil scientist, forester, and mycologist by trade, but my experience includes significant work with other resources, including: silviculture, wildlife biology, hydrology, botany, insects and diseases, timber planning, watershed restoration, ornithology, genetics, GIS analyses, modelling, and environmental compliance (NEPA).

The goal of this consulting firm is to provide time sensitive, empirically sound, and quality-controlled data products to clients seeking a firm with significant ecological experience across the lower 48 states and Alaska.

Our values are driven by tactile processes. We like to work in the field and collect high quality data. My job has been to collect data from some of the most remote and inaccessible places on the continent and provide quality controlled data and management recommendations based on this data. We synthesize this data through management reports, visuals, and modelling.

We seek to work with clients that promote conservation, research and understanding of the natural world, and drive ecology at the nexus of theory and applied action.
